A Personal Story
When I was having my sciatic nerve pain, I would have tried anything to help relieve the pain in my back. I was looking for any treatment that would help improve my quality of life. I had extreme pain up and down my right side, my right leg felt numb most of the time, and I could not drive or even sit in the car without being in extreme pain. My life was taking a major detour because of the severe pain.
One day my boys persuaded me to go out and play basketball with them. I walked slowly to the driveway trying to strengthen myself out and getting psyched up thinking – this might actually help me to get out and move around a little bit.
Ohhh man…It was not to be.
As I took the basketball and starting bouncing the ball, the pain shot up my back and down my leg -I wreathed in pain. It was the worst pain I had experienced. I let the basketball roll away and I walked back inside and tried to recover from the pain. Just bouncing the basketball brought intense pain!
I thought surgery was my only option.
I was able to dramatically relieve the pain by doing some simple exercises and by applying ice to areas of my back to reduce swelling and increase blood flow to the area. It took about 2-3 months of daily consistent exercises, treatments and applying ice – but the pain is gone.
I did not use any drugs and I did not have surgery. I am not saying that surgery is not needed in many cases. It has helped many people that I know and it is a real option for people who have extreme back pain. However I am saying that surgery does not need to be your first option when it comes to relieving the back pain. There are some really, really good techniques that are proven to drastically reduce or even completely eliminate the pain and bring back your quality of life.
Good Sciatic Nerve Treatments to Reduce or Eliminate Pain – Here is what I did.
You can check out this program which has some good exercises and great treatment that will help reduce the pain. When the treatment is done correctly, it can reduce the pain rather quickly. I did not do this program specifically, but it is very similar to what I did – you can check it out here Treat Sciatica Now.
Another good program can be found here. This program focuses on treating the muscles and building strength around the sciatic nerve. You will need to do this at some point no matter what. It is imperative that you strengthen your abdomen and back muscles – this will help prevent any further damage to your back. I am working through a program very similar to this to build up my muscles to support my back. I am also exercising more which has been great.
Back support to Help Eliminate Pain and Help Posture
In addition to the sciatic nerve treatments to reduce or eliminate the pain, a good back support or back brace will help keep your back from slipping into bad posture and aggravating the nerve. I used a Lumbar Support Brace to support my back and posture. This helped a lot. Between using this and applying ice to the lower back, and the treatments, I noticed an immediate improvement. I was able to get around more and move a lot easier wearing the Lumbar Support Brace. You can pick up these braces on Amazon.com
I also used (and I am still using) a good memory foam cushion support in my office chair and at home. I just feel better using the chair support – it keeps my back from slouching in the chair. A good pain cream on the rubbed on the back in the evening is also very helpful.
If you are having consistent pain, even after these treatments, your condition is severe and you must seek help from a specialist/expert- not just a regular doctor. Not all back doctors are created equally – you will need to see a specialist.
This is what I went through, and I did not need surgery. Although I was able to have relief from the pain fairly quickly, the process did take some time; there is no quick sciatic nerve treatment that will fix your problem for the long term – unfortunately, that is the way it is. However, I do not have any more pain – and you can be that way too.
